Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program teams with VN Team Work to initiate legal services in the Asian Community

Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program in collaboration with VN Team Work and law firms and attorneys affiliated with the Houston Bar Association, are holding monthly legal clinics for low-income individuals living in Harris County and the surrounding areas. The Asian American population, especially the most poverty stricken, has historically been underserved in the legal services arena. To help overcome some of these obstacles, HVLP is establishing a monthly legal advice clinic providing legal services to the Asian American population by utilizing Asian American volunteers and attorneys. This monthly legal advice clinic will be held at a designated area in the Asian community, also known as the “New Chinatown” in the Houston area. HVLP will work in conjunction with other Asian community-based organizations to promote these legal services. Volunteer attorneys at the HVLP Legal Advice Clinics will provide brief legal advice—15 to 20 minutes—to qualifying participants. In addition to a monthly legal advice clinic, HVLP will also expand the current Asian American will clinics. These semiannual clinics will be held on Saturdays at a community center located in the Asian community.
